Section 2. Methodologies for breaking down resistance to masculinity in the Adult Education
Main ideas
The main ideas to be taken into account in the course “Emotional Intelligence” are the following:
- Attitudes (including macho attitudes) are learned through observation of the environment and imitation. However, it is possible to change attitudes through education and, of course, through adult education.
- Breaking through resistance to masculinity is difficult, but there are several psychological theories that explain how to change people’s (in this case, students’) attitudes.
- Peer pressure and majority opinion are essential aspects to be able to make a student see a reality that he/she denies at that moment (such as gender inequality). This, supported by statistical resources, case studies or dynamics that encourage gender flexibilisation can be a good option to break the resistance to masculinity.
- Psychosocial and emotional intelligence strategies also facilitate a change in attitudes and the reformulation of social stereotypes and stigmatising ideas such as machismo.
- The power of language can enhance macho behaviour if the language is not inclusive. Therefore, if the aim of Adult Education is to break with masculinity and raise awareness of the importance of feminism, it is important to take care of the details of communication, using inclusive language.
