Masculinity and emotions. The case of young students from the Liceo de aplicación.
Framed within the problem of the relationship between emotionality and the construction of masculinity, this research aims to account for the discourses that fourth-grade students at the Liceo de Aplicación elaborate around the expression of emotions in the relationships they establish with their peers: specifically on the problem of helping and caring for others, the externalisation of emotional pain or affliction and demonstrations of affection. To this end, I conducted 11 semi-structured in-depth individual interviews, generating a private and trusting environment conducive to the sensitivity of the subject. By means of the above, I sought to investigate the symbolic – and therefore often practical – closeness or remoteness of these emotional expressions in relation to the hegemonic meanings that have traditionally served as referents of meaning for men and that appeal to the repression of these behaviours and emotions.
