Emotional education as a resource for the prevention of gender-based violence in primary school children

Gender-based violence is often mistakenly understood as a problem that occurs in the private sphere. However, it should be interpreted as a phenomenon that takes place in our society, structurally marking the inequality between men and women. In this sense, the quality of education in recent years has incorporated emotional intelligence as a compliment to cognitive development, and there is currently work aimed at enhancing emotional skills in order to address relationships based on equality. In this paper, training is proposed in Emotional Intelligence skills in Primary Education classrooms as a tool for the prevention of attitudes that trigger symbolic violence between genders. To this end, an emotional education programme is presented based on primary prevention and aimed at pre-adolescent pupils in the sixth year of Primary Education (11-12 years old). It consists of 15 sessions grouped into 4 blocks of content according to the “Multifactorial Model of Emotional Intelligence” by Bar-On (1997). The programme is an innovative proposal that facilitates the student in an integral way: learning to live together, learning to be, learning to do and learning to learn (Delors, 1996).
